Teenagers face many challenges when it comes to their oral health. These challenges range from the need for orthodontic treatment to struggles with appearance, bad breath, wisdom teeth removal and poor diet. Many teenagers also have busy lives and are involved with a variety of activities such as school, jobs, sports and other social activities. This makes oral health and dental care during the teenage years incredibly important.
We encourage you to bring your child to our office every six months for their regular dental appointment. Our dentist will work with you and your teenager to help them develop good oral habits so that they can enjoy excellent oral health and a beautiful smile.
Here are a few tips on ways you can help your child pass through their teenage years with good oral health:
  • Encourage them to take good care of their teeth. This includes daily brushing and flossing at home as well as receiving regular preventive care from our dentist.
  • Set a good example for them. If you are making an effort to take good care of your teeth, your teenager will be more likely to follow your example.
  • Keep oral healthcare supplies on hand (toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, etc.).
  • Help your child maintain a balanced, nutritious diet. Keep lots of fresh fruits and vegetables on hand. Try to avoid keeping a stock of junk food in the house.
  • Speak with your teenager about the dangers of oral health hazards, such as smoking and oral piercings.
  • Teenagers are notorious for being concerned with their appearance — appeal to their self-confidence and self-image to encourage them to maintain good oral hygiene habits.
